It’s official: The look of 1980s Japanese conceptualism is building up as a trend. You can follow the trail of its pleats and wraps and asymmetric this-and-that through the cities, starting at The Row, through J.W. Anderson, to Gucci, and now, to Bottega Veneta. Of course, none of the designers involved (so far) are actually Japanese, which means the movement is largely dissociated from Japan’s intellectual subversion, and reduced to a matter of fabric choices and 3-D effects.
